Protein: how much you really need on keto
Published on June 16, 2026
Keto is not a high-protein diet. How much protein you really need, why 'moderate', and from which sources.

A common misconception: "keto = eating lots of meat." False. The ketogenic diet is moderate in protein, rich in fats. Let's see why.
How much protein?
A useful reference is about 1.4โ2.0 g of protein per kg of body weight per day, depending on physical activity. The macro calculator gives you your starting value.
Why not to overdo it
- Fats are the fuel of keto: if you fill everything with protein, there's little room left for fats.
- Excess protein, in some people, can slightly affect blood sugar.
Why not too little
Protein helps preserve muscle mass while you lose weight and keeps you full. Cutting it too much is a mistake.
The best sources
Eggs, meat, fish, cheese, and partly nuts. Aim for quality and spread it across your meals.
Next step: ketosis, what it is and how to tell.
