Sugar on keto is to be avoided because it raises blood sugar and insulin (we explain it in glucose and insulin). But the craving for something sweet remains: which sweeteners can you use without leaving ketosis?

✅ Suitable for keto

They have minimal or no impact on blood sugar:

  • Erythritol: a well-tolerated sugar alcohol, almost zero calories.
  • Stevia: of plant origin, very sweetening.
  • Monk fruit: natural, with no glycemic impact.
  • Allulose: a taste very similar to sugar.

⚠️ To limit or avoid

  • Maltitol and other "cheap" sugar alcohols: they can raise blood sugar more than expected and cause digestive upset.
  • "Brown" sugar, honey, syrups: they're still sugar, plain and simple.
  • "Hidden" sweeteners in packaged "sugar-free" products: always read the label.

In practice

Choose erythritol, stevia or monk fruit to sweeten drinks and recipes. And if you're unsure about a food, check its carbs with the calculator.
